We had the Racine/Kenosha/Walworth bee clubs come to tour the honey bee lab this past week. Thank you to everyone that came out for the event! They got to see what we have been working on in the lab this past year including a demonstration on how artificial insemination of queen bees is performed. Looking forward to this again in the future!

The dream team is back together for one week only and you know what that means! It’s mite washing time. We sampled all the colonies in the operation and ended up with very few mites. We will have a field report with the full results later this winter to share on our website. Good luck to everyone getting their mite counts finished the month!

We finished up our artificial insemination of breeder queens for the season today. Nothing like holding a whole queen banking frame of breeder queens to make a beekeeper’s day! Time to get them into colonies and ready for winter.

During the grading of Brooks Mill Farm’s almond colonies with our Lloyd Street Bees Northern VSH stock, we performed a pin kill brood assay for hygienic behavior. We definitely found some winners in the cohort of colonies we randomly selected. The photos show what the samples looked like after 0, 6 and 24 hours. We think it’s safe to say that you’ll want our stock in your apiary too! Link 🔗 in bio!

We were checking a colony that had swarmed the other day and found this virgin queen that had recently gone on a mating flight. You can see a portion of the drone phallus, mating sign, still attached to her body from her flight.

Uncapping and recapping of sealed pupae cells in the colony is a mite resistance trait. The first picture has an arrow showing the dull spot on the underside of the capping of where the uncapping and the recapping occurred. The second photo is from our bees this spring and is what we see in the field when this trait is being expressed. Notice the hole in most of the older pupae cappings, well past the time when they should be sealed.

We performed a modified VSH assay today at the USDA and saw a few things we wanted to share with you folks! The photo with the red arrow points out a varroa mite entombed in silk. Varroa sensitive hygiene (mite resistance) testing is a test for that specific behavior and then allows us to score how highly the VSH trait is being expressed.

Wanda the winter bee came out for coffee this morning. The bees are extremely active at this point, but we have yet to see any pollen coming into our colonies. We are getting reports from beekeepers in Madison and Northern IL that they have seen silver maple pollen coming into their colonies this week. Keep your eyes out for pale yellow pollen on incoming bees!

Don’t Throw Out Your Nuc Box: More Uses Than You Think!
When you receive your nuc from us, it comes packaged in a white plastic box called an EZ Nuc or Jester Nuc box. These boxes are totally reusable and can handle a significant amount of abuse in the field, we literally throw them around when they are empty at the bee yards. Unlike waxed cardboard nuc boxes that other bee suppliers use, our boxes won’t warp and degrade when left in the field. They are also superior to the Pro Nucs we have seen being used.
